Good morning my friend!
I’m sending this letter on Saturday, since tomorrow is Easter Sunday.
Lisa, Tata, and I pray that you have a wonderful day tomorrow celebrating the resurrection of our Savior, and that the year will take on new hope and meaning as you reflect on the great price Jesus paid for our sins.
Today I read John 20:5-9, and something occurred to me that we discussed on the podcast this morning. Here’s the text:
5 He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. 6 Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, 7 while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. 8 Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— 9 for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. John 20:5-9, NLT
When Jesus rose from the dead, he left the grave clothes behind. He was alive, and didn’t need the things that were meant for the dead.
Here’s what I realized: Jesus’s resurrection means that we have a new life. And that means there should be some things we leave behind in the tomb, since those things don’t belong to us anymore.
Are there some things you’re dragging around as if you’re obligated to have them, when the truth is that you should have shed them in the grave of your old life?
This is what Hebrews 12:1 is talking about, by the way: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
If you’re tired of being so tired, tired of carrying burdens you’re not meant to carry anymore, maybe it’s time to put them down. You have a new life, and tomorrow of all days should remind us to be grateful to God that this is true.
Get rid of the things that should have been left behind, and start living in the truth of what Easter means: you’re alive and have hope because he is risen!
The good news is, you can start today.
Lisa and I are praying for you.
