When The Massive Thing Happens to Someone Else
What to do, when to do it, what to say and not say, and more. Plus- two new podcasts, and an opportunity for you to help.
Good morning my friend!
The floods in South Texas have created immense suffering for many families, and we’ve been overwhelmed with the videos and heartbreaking stories all weekend. We received a request for this episode from a friend whose young daughter lost a close friend in the floods.
When tragedy strikes, when The Massive Things happens, what do we do? How do we help? What can we say that will be comforting and not hurtful? That’s what I covered here. Please share with someone if you think it will be helpful to them as we all try to navigate the role of coming alongside people in their pain.
We have two kids, three grandkids, and a lot of friends and family in the area affected by the flooding. It’s so personal when you watch the news and see something like this and you say, “I know where that bridge is!” or “I’ve been to that camp before,” like Lisa and Tata and I were experiencing all weekend.
Here’s my message for how you can help, pray, and otherwise be there for people when they go through anything hard, inspired by our friend’s question.

I reached out to a trusted friend who lives in Comfort, Texas (in the middle of this tragedy), and asked him to help us choose an organization you could donate to if you feel led to help the relief efforts. Please consider giving if you’re able. If you’d rather give to a church that’s helping on the ground, I also spoke to Max Lucado yesterday and he gave me the link to the Oak Hills Disaster Recovery Fund from his church.
