Thank you for this Joel, and congratulations for your major life change. My comment about there being no healthy relationship was just emphasize the fact that all of the data are clear that alcohol has no actual health benefits, and directly harms our body in numerous ways.
That’s not to say that it’s completely wrong to use it responsibly, just that there is no “safe” amount in terms of direct toxicity to cells.
I’m not sure I’d agree there’s “no healthy relationship,” but I quit drinking over two years ago and don’t regret the change for a second. I grew up in Northern California. My dad and grandpa both made wine, and we always had it with dinner. When I turned 21 I started making beer. I loved the culture of wine and beer, the fellowship around it. But when I hit my mid 40s, I was overweight and reliant on alcohol for its famous effects. I tried tapering off, but that proved difficult so I just stopped drinking altogether. I almost immediately lost 30 pounds, and I feel fantastic. I’m in the best health of my adult life. Alcohol did me few favors; I don’t have any room for it in my life now.
